The pediatric cardiology APN reflects the mission, vision, and values of Advocate Health Care and adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics. The pediatric cardiology APN works independently and collaboratively as part of the interdisciplinary team to provide pediatric cardiology patients health promotion, disease prevention, health education and counseling as well as the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic cardiac diseases through high-quality, cost-effective delivery of care focused on population health. This includes the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patient problems by prescribing pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments. The primary goal of the pediatric cardiology APN is to provide comprehensive health care services to pediatric cardiology patients and their families in the acute inpatient setting.

Area Specific Job Accountabilities:

  • Provides expert clinical care, education, consultation, advocacy research, leadership and mentorship.
     
  • Manages acute and chronic pediatric cardiology patients through comprehensive history and physical examination assessment and diagnosis. This includes acting as the primary care team, as well as consultants for pediatric cardiology patients.
     
  • Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures.
     
  • Orders and prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
     
  • Collaborates closely with fellow APNs, fellow and cardiologists to ensure excellent patient care and efficient implementation of patient care.
     
  • Able to adapt to the changing daily work flow to ensure patient’s needs are prioritized. Specifically, is able to recognize and facilitate the primary needs of patients.
     
  • Promotes the advancement of the nursing profession and the community-at-large. This may include publication, participation in professional organizations and providing educational support to the nursing staff.
     
  • Collaborates and coordinates care with medical team to deliver evidenced-based care and establish best practices in clinical care. This includes expert communication with the various interdisciplinary team members (i.e. NICU, PICU, ED, pediatricians, cardiologists, nursing staff, respiratory staff, PT/OT/speech, social work and care managers).
     
  • Participates in research design, interpretation and implementation.
     
  • Meets the Medical Staff’s Allied Health Practitioners core measures of performance related to patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, and system based practice.
     
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to patients, families, co-workers and others.
