TECHNICAL SPECIALIST- ONCOLOGY, HIT Oncology Applications Department, AdvocateAurora Health, Downers Grove, Illinois

To provide the highest level of technical expertise in the collection, installation, configuration, conversion, implementation, and support of application systems, both hardware and software must be selected, configured, and implemented such that they effectively respond to the business requirements of the intended hospital or business unit.


  • Provide analytical and technical skills and knowledge necessary to support the development, enhancement and provision of systems, products and services that meet user functional requirements: make recommendations, where appropriate, to improve product utilization and support related to new and existing systems.
  • Participates in the development of project plans including; detailed task lists, work breakdown structures, resource estimates, and schedules. Prepares project status reports for the project manager.
  • Develops and oversee the execution of comprehensive test plans. Tracks and coordinates resolution of problems with staff and vendors. Completes post-implementation audits to assure system effectiveness and successful fulfillment of client objectives.
  • Participate in project planning, coordinating and monitoring activities and provide technical direction to project team to assure effective project completion in compliance with design and quality standards.
  • Provides effective technical direction for assigned projects. Anticipates project roadblocks and effectively avoids them. Continually provides technical directions for the project team, including: activity scheduling, resource assignment, and work review.
  • Provide timely and effective maintenance and production support by acting as the primary or secondary on-call support. Perform and analyze application, network, and interface flows in a distributed environment. Provide automated systems support that will ensure optimum control and security of data in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.
  • Maintain the highest technical knowledge of standard languages, coding methods and operations requirements, to ensure accurate software configurations and continually develop and enhance professional skills and knowledge applicable to maximizing the quality of services/support provided to the user environment.
  • Develops and maintains complex reports utilizing appropriate software (SQL, Business Objects, Crystal Reports, or EMR Reporting Applications).
  • Utilizes data to drive performance and conducts metric based analysis to identify efficiency maximization strategies.
  • Provides On-Call rotation support, includes weekends and holidays.
  • Must have transportation and ability to travel to all Advocate sites that utilize an Oncology EMR.


  • Excellent PC skills and demonstrated competency with word processing, graphs and spreadsheets, and editing report layouts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to work quickly, accurately and independently.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Information Systems
  • 5+ years Oncology EMR vendor support specialist experience
  • 6+ years progressively responsible information systems experience with technical management exposure in the following areas: implementation/administrator experience with electronic medical record systems; development experience with database driven web applications; Crystal Reports development experience.
  • 5+ years advanced experience with managing Elekta EMR or Oncology EMR applications and technology preferred.
  • 5+ years of designing and developing healthcare focused analytic and reporting solutions using tools like Crystal Reports, SQL, Business Objects, SAP Business Intelligence, Hyperion preferred.
  • 5+ years Web Development experience, emerging technologies (like C#, ASP, NET, Java, JavaScript preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible information systems experience with technical management experience preferred.
