The Patient Care Tech (PCT) provides quality care to patients in a manner which is patient focused, technically appropriate and cost effective.  

  • The PCT works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse in accordance with accepted standards of practice, within the guidelines of the Illinois Nursing Practice Act and the Mission and Philosophy of Advocate Health Care and partners in the care, treatment and education of patients.  
  • The Patient Care Technician recognizes the needs and behaviors of patients of various age groups and provides care in a manner that is age appropriate.  
  • The Patient Care Technician strives for patient-centered care which assures the patient is treated holistically with dignity and respect. 

Quality: Participate in the Admission/Discharge process of all patients under guidance of the Registered Nurse or designee. Perform tasks related to maintaining the integrity of patient care standards and efficient unit operations. 

Productivity: Provides general patient care duties that are specific to the patient population served and as directed by the Registered Nurse. Contribute to the patient plan of care through the documentation and/or communication of patient needs, problems and outcomes to other healthcare providers as appropriate 

People Growth: Establish and achievement of self-development objectives and continued advancement of the team 

Customer Satisfaction: Provide all customers with appropriate services to meet their needs to assist the team in achieving success in their customer satisfaction strategies 

Organizational Climate: Participates in an environment within the practice team that supports management philosophy, the hospital’s strategic plans and Advocate strategies.  

Innovation: Contributes to the department and hospital innovation efforts to maximize excellence and build respect for service 



  • High School diploma or equivalent 
  • Certified Nurse Assistant 
  • One year CNA experience or one year phlebotomy experience or one year EKG experience 
  • CPR Certification 
  • Phlebotomy certification within 6 months 
  • EKG certification within 6 months 
  • Knowledge of basic computer keyboard functions is preferred 
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing 
  • Courteous and professional inter-personal skills 
  • Ability to successfully complete hospital-based training for Patient Care Assistants 
  • Ability to rotate shifts to provide coverage 
  • Exposure to various contagious disease, radiation, chemicals, caustic materials, electrical equipment and hazards associated with their use 
  • Demands which require walking, standing, bending, and lifting throughout the work day 
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. or more may be required 
  • This position will need to recognize needs and  
    behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated (i.e., understand growth and development.) 

** If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
