Purpose:

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a leader in the creation and sustainment of the “ideal patient experience” throughout Good Samaritan Hospital, by developing, implementing and monitoring systems and processes that ensure the highest quality of care, patient safety, high reliability, and evidence based medical standards are practiced.  The VP/CMO partners with administration, medical staff and Advocate’s clinical integration function to maintain the high quality of the medical staff.  This position directs the areas of Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and Infection Control and Risk Management.  The role also has several critical matrix and collaborative working relationships to drive clinical strategies, interdisciplinary processes, clinical quality structures, and achieving excellent outcomes for the organization

Accountabilities:

  1. Provides the leadership and direction for quality driving top decile quality outcomes.  This entails leading the Medical Staff Quality Peer Review Committee and Management of Infection Risk Committee, partnering with department chairs and medical staff officers on medical staff quality assurance, risk management and utilization review matters, developing standards and process to improve quality outcomes, ensuring strategies are in place to control the risks of patient care and supporting all Advocate Aurora quality and care management initiatives. 
  2. Creates and sustains a culture of high reliability in patient safety and infection prevention. Is able to lead the medical staff in the implementation and accountability for infection control practices.  Actively participates in robust root cause analysis processes to drive the reduction of future errors.
  3. Provides the leadership to the medical staff in matters of appointments, clinical privileges, bylaws and other rules, policies and procedures.  Works closely with the President of the Medical Staff to investigate and resolve conflicts and/or complaints within or against members of the medical staff.
  4. Active member of the hospital executive team and as such, participates in strategic planning, physician retention and recruitment, resource allocation, operating and annual budget and capital discussions.  Represents the hospital on various internal and external committees, as well as serves as an ex-oficio member of medical staff committees.
  5. Reviews the delivery of services and care provided to patients for medical necessity, appropriateness and conformance to professional standards as determined by the appropriate medical staff committee.
  6. Involved in regulatory activities of IDPH, CMS, CDC, and DNV (not exhaustive) to drive compliance, resolution of patient complaints and licensure requirements.

 

Position Requirements:

  • Illinois Medical License.
  • Board Certification.
  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience.
  • 3-5 years management experience.
  • Preferred formal management education.
  • Demonstrated continuous education in management and leadership development.
  • Experience with financial and clinical risk management.
  • Experience with and commitment to Accrediting Organization and NCQA performance improvement expectations for health care organizations
  • Familiarity with HEDIS 3 indicators for quality.
  • Experience with physician education design and implementation.
  • Experience with and commitment to continuous performance and quality improvement methodology. (Identify, collaborate, understand, improve, mentor, assess).
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and general interactive skills.
  • Medical Staff Membership (Advocate).
  • Demonstrated ability to gain medical staff support when developing, implementing, and promoting projects, ventures, and programs in a highly matrix environment.
  • Experience monitoring and managing physician practice productivity and the peer review process.
  • A relationship builder and effective communicator across the organization to include medical staff, senior management, clinical leaders, staff, patients, and partner organizations.
  • Experience building relationships between employed, contracted, and private practice physicians and between hospitals and ambulatory operations with results measured across the continuum of care through patient, employee and physician satisfaction scores and related action plans
  • Experience and training in the development and operation of a high reliability organization.
