The Director of Grants and Program Development is a system-level leadership role that is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of current and potential grant funders in support of Advocate Aurora Health. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Grants and Program Development, the Director will work collaboratively across the health system to develop and execute strategies to maintain and grow a robust grants program that meets annual production and revenue goals.The Director cultivates relationships with system and site-level clinical and administrative leaders and facilitates planning sessions to identify opportunities to extend program reach and impact through grantseeking and philanthropic partnerships.The Director will work independently and in concert with leaders and project teams in the development of an initial grant-making strategy, the execution of timely grant proposals, and the stewardship of grants for site and system initiatives. The Director will plan and manage fundraising efforts corresponding to defined organizational priorities to engage foundations, corporations, and government agencies in our mission through a broad range of activities including: prospect research, program development, proposal writing, site visits, stewardship, reports, and other meaningful contacts with grant funders and prospects. 


Position Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree required
  • At least 7 years experience in business, development or health/social service.
  • Minimum 5 years of business writing or grant writing experience
  • Exposure/understanding of philanthropy.
  • Excellent relationship building skills.
  • Project development skills including program identification and developing action plans and budgets.
  • Excellent proposal writing skills.
  • Knowledge of national and local health care issues and trends preferred


Major Responsibilities:

  • Work with system and site-based program leaders as well as strategic and community partners to support program development efforts. Lead efforts in grant planning. Coordinate the gathering of program and other information to prepare general and project-specific proposals. Compose and prepare proposals, applications and supporting documents as required by funders. Develop timely and competitive proposal submissions that include sound program designs, goals and objectives, action plans and budgets. Increase funding for system and site initiatives.



  • Convene and lead teams of system and program leaders throughout the organization for the purposes of program and proposal development.  The Director will also provide some management of other team members in the day-to-day operations of proposal development, submission and stewardship.  



  • Acquire and maintain sound knowledge of Advocate Aurora Health system priorities as well as an inventory of funding needs, mission-driven programs, and emerging strengths to develop competitive strategies and proposals. Use this knowledge to develop organizational profiles and to identify and understand current/new projects and programs for which grants will be sought.


  • Assist the Vice President of Grants and Program Development in the creation and implementation of strategies to augment and diversify the foundation, corporate and government portfolios that support Advocate Aurora Health.



  • Develop and implement strategies to secure new/continuation grants for projects and programs. Work with system and program leaders to determine funding needs and help match program needs—current and projected—with potential funding sources.



  • Engage in prospect research activities on a routine basis to identify new foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities. Assist in defining and implementing strategies and processes that will assure timely access to information about funding opportunities.



  • Oversee donor stewardship activities in response to grants and institutional gifts, including but not limited to correspondence to respectfully acknowledge the gift and donor relationship. Define and implement systems to assure adequate monitoring of program outcomes and timely reports as required by the funder. Help manage a deliverables calendar and production process for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Work with program leaders to collect and report on outcomes and achievements. Arrange and lead site visits with prospect and current institutional donors.




  • Partner with the prospect researchers of Adovcate Aurora Health Foundations, External Relations and Government and Commnity Relations leaders to identify potential funders. Work with system and site-based team leaders to identify potential programs/opportunities for philanthropic support.




  • Support/lead prospect review sessions to develop cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies. Implement and update strategies. Cultivate and maintain relationships with health care influencers and corporate executives as needed.


  • Contribute to the development of program-focused campaigns to advance achievement of Advocate Aurora Health’s strategic vision. Collaborate with leadership to maximize integrated fundraising efforts on behalf of the system as a whole, sites, and mission programs.
