Job Description

The Department of Surgery Chair will provide overall medical leadership, clinical expertise,vision, and administrative competencies to ensure high quality, cost-effective health care services in accordance with the standards of practice of medicine, as well as to provide strategic leadership in planning and developing quality patient care servcies. The expectation is that approximately 75% of the Department Chair’s time will be spent on activities focused on leading the Department of Surgery and approximately 25% will be spent on personal clinical activity.  The Department of Surgery Chair will serve as a member of the site's senior administrative team to ensure the following:

  • The Department of Surgery promotes excellent customer service and Advocate Aurora's mission, values, and philosophy.



  1. CLINICAL LEADERSHIP FOR OPERATIVE SERVICES - Provides clinical expertise, leadership, and counsel for all surgical activity occurring at the Medical Center related to strategies to ensure the highest level of patient care, patient satisfaction, and quality consistent with the Department's mission, vision, and strategic plan, as well as that of the hospital and of the Advocate Aurora Health system.
  2. PROFESSIONAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITIES - Accountable to the Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for all professional and medical administrative activities. Collaborates with the Senior Leadership of the Department on all operational and administrative issues related to patient care. Participates on a continuous basis in the administration of the Department through cooperation and coordination with site administration on all matters affecting quality and patient care.  Accountable to the Advocate Aurora Health system as a whole.
  3. LEADERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT OF PHYSICIANS, SURGICAL SERVICES, AND ACHIEVEMENT OF KRA GOALS - Leads the strategic and program planning, business development, research and education taking into account the Department's equipment, facilities, services, team members, and budget to ensure cost effective care, growth, achievement of KRA goals, and viability of the Department into the future.
  4. PERSONAL CLINICAL ACTIVITY - Develops and maintains an active clinical practice to address the needs of AMG physicians and other physicians and patients of the community and to complement the existing services provided by the Department of Surgery.
