Purpose:
The Safety Officer directs, partners and collaborates with hospital and department leaders, committees and associates in the development and implementation of all safety training, policies, procedures, corrective action plans and management activities. The Safety Officer provides leadership and technical knowledge in all safety and regulatory requirements to reduce risk of injury, litigation, regulatory fines and to ensure a safe environment that meets the Physical Environment Management System regulatory requirements for patients, associates, visitors, contractors and the physical environment at the assigned site (s) and associated offsite facilities. The Safety Officer reports to the system Manager of Regulatory Compliance and collaborates with the Regional Directors and site leaders of the Facilities and Construction Departments.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide direction, oversight, leadership and partnership as the principal safety and Physical Environment regulatory standards representative to various departments, teams and committees that are responsible for the safe environment for patients, visitors, associates and contractors at the assigned site (s) and associated offsite facilities.
  • Provide and direct ongoing monitoring of the physical environment through regularly scheduled rounding and inspections to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and associates at the assigned site (s) and associated offsite facilities.
  • Support the CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement), OI (Operational Improvement) and QMS (Quality Management System) by the development and communication of properly documented reports, analysis and action on Physical Environment related issues.
  • Provide direction and oversight to ensure regulatory compliance of emergency responses and as the Safety Officer provide timely response to requests for assistance and coordinate work activities with requesting hospital departments, local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and other regulatory agencies at the assigned site (s) and associated offsite facilities.
  • Provide and direct safety training to hospital staff, contractors and outside service providers at assigned facility (s) and associated offsite facilities.

 

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in safety, healthcare, facilities, regulatory, engineering, construction or related field and 5 to 7 years' experience in safety or related healthcare field
  • OR Associates degree with 8 plus years' experience in healthcare, facilities, safety, regulatory, engineering construction management or related healthcare field.
  • Critical and independent decision making and thinking.
  • Proficiency in ability to demonstrate clear and concise communications.
  • Proficiency in ability to partner and collaborate with all levels of hospital management and regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency in performing hazard surveillance, safety training, scheduling and monitoring of fire drills, safety inspections, reporting and documentation.
  • Ability to operate computers and software such as Excel, Access, Power Point, Word and other programs.
  • Obtain CHFM or CHSP within 12 months of start.
  • Complete Advocate Health Care QMOC Auditor Training and Mock Surveyor Training within 6 months of start.
