Position: Outpatient Phlebotomist-Technical (Non-Cert)

Location: Good Shepherd hospital, Barrington, IL.

Registry - working on-call, scheduled as needed; Day/PM shifts.

  • Will need to cover hours with start time of 0615 and leave time of 1815 as needed. Saturday hours 0645 to 1300.


Provides accurate, timely, and customer~focused collection and processing of laboratory specimens to ensure cost~effective laboratory testing for patients according to approved policies and procedures.

Join an experienced team of  Outpatient Phlebotomists in our new Testing Center. Collaborate with many other disciplines to provide excellent patient care. Two years of Phlebotomy preferred including Pediatric patients.


Position Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of basic phlebotomy technique and the use of vacutainers, needles, and syringes.
  • Basic familiarity with CRT's and keyboards.
  • Exceptional patient relation skills
  • Is eligible to sit for ASCP phlebotomy certification exam
  • If hired prior to July 2011, formalized phlebotomy educational program or pertinent on the job experience is acceptable
  • CPR Able to access work area.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations
  • Ability to work Saturday morning shifts
  • Ability to lift/transport specimens, specimen containers, and biohazard bags weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • May be exposed to potentially toxic and/or carcinogenic solutions and vapors.
  • Able to work in a fast~paced environment with established time constraints.
  • Routinely works with biohazardous specimens and infectious agents.
  • This position can recognize needs and behaviors of the following age groups: pediatric (newborn, toddler, school age), adolescent, adult, and older adult.
  • Evidence of this can be shown by recognizing levels of development and modifying approach and exhibiting communication skills necessary to interpret age specific responses.

If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case~by~case basis.


  • Collection of Patient specimens in accordance with accepted laboratory standards and policies and procedures in order to ensure optimal specimen integrity and accurate test results.
  • Processes incoming laboratory orders and specimens in a customer~focused cost~effective manner to ensure quality patient care results.
  • Perform and assist in noninvasive electrocardiography cardiology services
  • Timely reporting of patient results and collection logs to maintain quality patient care.
  • Actively participates in Performance Improvement and Advocate Experience activities within the department.
  • Maintains a minimum level of competency on policies and procedures.
  • Performs gulcose time tests according to established procedures.
  • Maintains work area.
